I dont really understand the portal 2 fandom on tumblr
I mean its an amazing game but it feels like people are inflating the number of things to talk/post/fan about far exceeding what there is to talk about for the actual game
Like I’m p sure if someone who didn’t know anything about portal saw all the stuff on tumblr about portal 2 theyd think it was some 500 hour sci fi rpg with a deep romantic love triangle plot and
nop its just a bunch of obstacle courses
Well, if to you all it was was a bunch of obstacle courses, more power to you if that’s what you enjoy but…
Let’s start with the fact that the game won a couple of awards for its’ narrative, story-telling and character development/design.
…but if that kind of a thing doesn’t float your boat:
The main protagonist is a woman of colour whom we actually find out half-way through the game was around for the disaster (Bring Your Daughter To Work Day) that sets the events of BOTH games in motion…which would suggest that Aperture was the kind of company that hired people of colour to a position high enough that their daughter would be asked to share her science experiment in the 50ies and 60ies. I mean, I’m absolutely sure someone who was interested in puzzles and obstacle courses wouldn’t have missed that Chell obviously had a project in that room…or um, nop.
There couldn’t possibly be anything to do with the fact that the stuff both GLaDOS and Wheatley spout is absolutely hysterical. Nop. You could just tune that out.
I’m sure that no one found it at least a little bit interesting that Portal makes direct references to another Valve Universe…say the Half Life Series? No one would wonder what Chell would be walking into at the end of Portal 2 if it were a world of Head Crab Zombies and the Vortigaunt. Nop. Don’t think it would ever interest a fan of both series.
Might not have anything to do with the absolute mindfuckery of how a man who was clearly brain-addled got away with not only experimenting on people but convincing an entire facility of people to take a woman, rip her mind from her body and shove it into a giant computer against her will. Or hire hobos and test on them. Or even MAKE any of the shit that Aperture got away with…and still have the wherewithal to overlook all that kind of amoral stuff, keep a billion-dollar industry running to full capacity but yet also hire with a means of equality far beyond what was normal for their time. Nop, no way that could possibly interest anyone.
Or someone who was interested in history. That’s several decades if not way more that Aperture’s existed. That’s a lot of time for the Earth to go anywhere. For people to go anywhere. Nop.
Certainly no one ever considers that having a surprise support character suddenly doing a alliance 180 on you and then expressing genuine remorse might change quite a bit about how one views the antagonist of the first game. No—
Okay, you know what, my sarcasm processor is just going to give up now. I certainly think that saying this is just going to be a bit lost on someone who really just sees this as a puzzle-shooter.
There’s tons of people in this fandom who enjoy creating test chambers and looking at the dev side of the game. However part of being a fan is looking deeper into the parts of it that interest you. I’ve outlined a few of the things that cause some fans to speculate and wonder and think about more than just what path gets the cubes on the buttons.
